Poster Design Theory

Before creating our poster,  we decided to look into design theory of posters, in order to help us create an effective poster for our production.

From this video we came across on YouTube, we noticed the significance of having key elements of the film in the centre of the poster's design, making it a focus of the poster. We also have from this considered how important it is to have appropriate colours and image to suit the genre of the film, so that when people look at the poster, they immediately are interested and have an understanding of the genre.

From this design theory video we considered the important aspects of our film poster and what needs to be included and how, as shown below.

Costume and Props

For our three different characters we have contrasting fashion styles which allow us to explore all elements of the fashion world. Also there are different shots and locations that are meant to be based over a couple of days and so the character must have different clothes, this are the options we chose.

Grunge Costume(s):

For the grunge girl we want her to match stereotypical view of her by having the character on drugs. The character is also not from a privileged background so her clothes are all similar and she wears the same thing more often.

The character will look casual and laid-back with either leggings or jeans and boots. The jeans and leggings are items that can have so many different looks with them giving the impression she has many different aspects of her.

For the top half the character would have different t-shirts that would match with her jeans or leggings and show a lot about her personality. The character would have shirts that showed what she liked. For example music shirts like Guns N Roses, Eminem etc.

The Grunge Girl would also wear a parka coat that would represent the cold weather of London as well as her fashion sense. It s a popular style of coat as well as very similar to the character. The character would have all these different items to make her completed 'Grunge' Look.

Skater Boy Costume(s):

With the male character, who will be dressed in a skater boy fashion style we want him to be a character who is friendly and easy to get along with as he is the character who's going to be the one who unites the others to become friends / team and to work together. The way he's dressed is going to be casual, laidback and calm showing him to be chilled out and not to worry to much, with this all in mind we looked in to what the characters costume would be like.

The male character would wear jeans to complement his looks and look fashionable. The blue jeans are casual and laidback which is desired for our characterisation.

The male character would wear jackets and coats to represent the cold London weather. This would range from a Red varsity jacket to a blue parka coat they are both  fashionable and stand out. His shoes will be practical trainers that are bright and fashionable for our film trailer.

The Girly Girl (s) :

For our film trailer we want our three characters contrasting in there different fashion styles and as we had two girls we wanted one to be a dark grunge style where the other to be girly girl. The Girly Girl would be in bright colours, cute skirts and fashionable outfits which would represent her character, personality and her social class. This character would be of a higher social class as she comes from a better more privileged background.

The character would wear a skater skirt which can be seen in the picture above as its fashionable, cute and also goes with a range of different fashion styles; like shirts, jumpers and blouses which show her girly style.

The character will wear a bright pink jumper to show her personality as being bright, caring and bubbly as she is sweet when defending other characters as well as being vocal and opinionated on events of the trailers. The character would also wear a jumper similar to the one on the left but with a brighter colour that gathers the attention of the audience and shows that she is fashionable.

Problem Resolution

We used a font specific to iMovie as our recurring font throughout the trailer, we wanted to make sure we continued this theme and therefore linked our ancillary texts to our trailer effectively, however this was made more difficult as the font itself was not possible to download onto any Macs or PCs.

We overcame this problem by entering all text we wanted in this font, in our ancillary texts, onto a black screen on iMovie, we then screen shot each piece of text, saving it as an image before we could use it.

We also had to upload the image to LunaPic, a free online photo editor, this allowed us to make the background of the text transparent, making it more easy to insert into our poster and website.

Trailer Title

For our film trailer we wanted to have a title that linked to the plot concept so we looked at different words that related to money or crime. So we made a list of all names relating to money which we could use.

Then we shortlisted the final five possible titles from our personal choices;

 Dosh
Capital
Assets
Coins
Buck

We then asked a large group of our target audience who gave us a clear view of which title they thought best fit the trailer as we showed them a small teaser.

Many of the viewers thought Capital was the most appropriate title as it references money and the location of the trailer. As it takes place in London and suits the raw action thrilled aspects of the film trailer and is now our chosen title.

Initial Storyboard

For our film trailer we drew a storyboard to aid the planning process before we went out to film. Since we created this storyboard, we developed it further and since have produced a new storyboard. This is the result of our initial storyboard;

Questionnaire for Feedback

To get the necessary feedback for our trailer we wanted to have a screening. We created a questionnaire which we could hand out to ask specific questions on what we wanted to be answered.

This questions were all relevant in getting the necessary feedback for our film trailer so we could make improvements and develop it.

Make Up

For the girls make up we need to shows a contrast in the way they look so we wanted to try different things out for there make up. I first needed to research in to the different styles I could use that would fit the characters and the actors would be complemented too.

Grunge Make Up Research:

From this research I discovered that the grunge girl is a darker side of make up. The style focuses on dark eye make up and lipstick. From purple, red and dark pink shades of lipsticks to dark Smokey eyes with eyeliner and mascara to emphasis the eyes and lips. Other than this two elements the make up is simple with just foundation and a slight bronzer.

With the girly girl we wanted to use natural make up to promote her fashion style and personality. When researching in to the make up I found it was a lot of the same materials. It include foundation, a bit of blush on the cheeks with natural nude colours for eye shadow finished with mascara and naturally coloured lips. This look was easy to create for our actor, Jessica Henderson.

To get even more knowledge on the make up that I wanted to use I looked into online make up tutorial that I could take inspiration from.

After this tutorials I went and had a go myself with help from a friend.

The make up was successful so we decided to use the make up as we had done as it represents the two contrasting characters nicely.

How to use Wix

This tutorial was useful for us all to watch before we began the process of designing our website, as none of us have previous experience with using web design sites. We chose to use the site Wix to create our website, as it was a simple to navigate and use. After watching this video and carrying out a small amount of experimentation ourselves, we feel more confident in the creation of our website.

Special Effect Make Up

For our trailer we have themes of violence and self harm and so for this to be effective we need to research and experiment with make up to create the effect of abuse. I researched in to different types of looks you can get from abuse.

After I gathered a wide range of different make up and effects I tried different methods of applying on to one of our actors to see if it would work effectively. When doing the make up I applied a very basic pale base so it would make the bruises and blood stand out more clearly, then applied a small amount of eye make up to keep it plain and basic. Then I used eye shadow to create the bruising around the eyes as I used shades of yellow, blue, purple, red and greens to show different stages of bruising and abuse.

This are the results of the make up attempts:

With the make up it was successful in giving one of the characters a believable black eye as we effectively used the different colour of eye shadows ranging from purple, black, green and yellow to show the different healing patterns of the bruise.

Now as well as bruising we wanted to experiment with self harming for an other character. The subject of self harm is a very sensitive subject and I took my research very seriously and carefully. After visiting different websites I decided that the cuts is the easiest to do one effectively as well as being the most conventional one,

I looked it up on YouTube and found a tutorial on how to do the cuts and make them look realistic.

Creating an interactive map

We wanted to create an interactive map of all of our filming locations, so we could not only see what distance they are away from eachother for planning and scheduling purposes, but also so we can visualise which route to take and where we will film the shots from.
To do this I used Google maps.
I logged in to my google account then clicked my maps, then create new map.
I then clicked create new marker and marked the first place of filming; Borough green train station
Then we decided to try to add a picture so that the map would be interactive, so we could click on any of our filming locations and see what they actually looked like.
We chose to use the pictures from Google street view.
So I print screened the Google streetview of our first location

However we discovered that you can't upload pictures directly from the desktop, it must be a web address.
First we tried using the free Google drive account to upload it however when we copy and pasted the sharing link it came up with a black screen.

We then checked the privacy settings and changed it to public

However it still didn't work.
So we Googled it and read through this Google answers forum

We attempted using Google Picassa but unfortunately it is blocked on the school system

So we then created a Flickr account, however this was also incompatible with the google maps system

We also tried creating a Photobucket account.
We uploaded the print screens of Borough Green station however we found even when we copied the address of the picture itself into Google Maps it still didn't work

We finally decided to concentrate on creating the locations on the map rather than the photos and found a way to change the icons on Google maps to represent different things

We chose to use small dots for short tunnels on the train, semi-circle with a dot in it for long tunnels on the train, the train icon for stations, waves for bridges, a P for the car park, a bed for the bedroom, a dollar sign for the bank, and a shopping bag for the shopping spree location.

Also we used the create line feature to show the route we would be walking. We made it a circular route to make the most of our time filming, and to avoid visiting the same locations twice, as it meant we could see as many different London streets as possible.

Logo Adjustments

After looking at some trailers, we noticed our logo didn't seem to match the conventions of the famous film logos
We took inspiration from this video and decided the logo needed a more three dimensional and kinetic feel.
However we still wanted to include the abstract feel of the universe to fit with our production company name, so we researched abstract visualisations, taking inspiration from the backdrop to many independent music videos
We then researched a video on the creative commons portion of the site which meant it was copyright free so we could use it as part of our own logo

We chose this video as we felt it had the most to work with and we liked the simple colour scheme as we find it eye-catching.

We selected one section of the video and chose to run it at 800% speed to make it shorter and give it more pace.We then run the same section of clip at the same speed but in reverse to give the impression it was expanding then receding as it gives a more complete and cyclical feel.

Finally we added our production name in copperplate font as we felt it was striking and clear to read but also quite distinctive so we can create a strong sense of branding across all of our products

We also used a blur effect to make the text feel more integrated with the visualisation.

\For the sound we cut the sound that was on the videos as because we had sped it up it sounded very high pitched, so instead we separated the sound and selected a 6 second clip to accompany the visual and also faded it in and out to make it less abrupt.

Health and Safety

When filming our trailer we need to take the Cast and Crew's safety in to consideration and so before we travel to our locations we need to prepare for health and safety precautions.

One of our locations is the drama studio where we will be filming the club and some of the drug shots, for this scene to be effective we needed a large group of people to fill the space. Now as we have to use the lights we must have a adult to supervise so we had asked our teacher to keep an eye on the lights and the large group when we filmed.

Now another location for our film is London and we are filming in a large amount of different locations and so the health and safety needs to be sorted. Now as its London the Cast and Crew must stay together as a group at all times in case of emergency, and even when filming different shots or separating for any reason cast and crew must be in groups of no less than 2, so that there is always someone to help should the situation arise.
We will also delicate one phone to be the emergency one that will stay fully charged and ready to call the emergency services.

Two members of our team, an actor and crew member has first aid training and so we have both of them if any of the members are injured or hurt. Also we will have a small first aid kit on us at all
times.

It will include:

  • Antiseptic wipes or spray for cleaning cuts and grazes.
  • Gauze squares to clean wounds.
  • Non-sticky dressings, such as Melolin, for covering wounds.
  • Fabric plasters (individually wrapped).
  • Blister plasters (individually wrapped).
  • A selection of individually wrapped wound dressings.
  • Paracetamol

  •
With all these different health and safety precautions the group will be prepared for any problems during filming,

    Budget

For our film trailer we have to account for the amount of money we will need to be able to get to locations,  props, costume and any technology we need to assist our filming. This video explains the budget we used and how it was spent.

    Talent Sourcing

For our characters we needed one boy within our trailer so we auditioned 3 different actors for the skater boy character. They all auditioned separately as well as in a group with the other girl actresses as that would be who they were acting behind.

For the two protagonist actresses we had a choice of three girls; Charlotte Spicer, Harriett Sydall and Jessica Henderson each one of these girls is a theatre student and all have the ability to perform well under pressure, any character and with anyone. The girls all auditioned for us by performing improvisations together, separately and scripts.

They all were very talented and appropriate for the film trailer, we tried Harriett and Jessica together playing the different contrasting characters and they worked well with each other and made a good contrast.

We then decided that these two girls would work effectively well together as they have worked together before, there both talented actresses and can both convincingly play the two contrasting characters go grange and Girly Girl.

    Equipment

For the majority of our filming we have decided to use the 8MP camera on the Iphone 5
It has full HD capabilities (1080P) and records 30 frames per second.
Below is a comparison between frame rates
Although the Frames per second is not the highest of filming equipment, we decided the other features available only on the Iphone such as touch focus (see below) and its ability top deal with low lighting levels without becoming grainy.
It also has a video stabilization feature which we will use in conjunction with the stabilization feature of IMovie to create the smoothest footage.
It also has touch focus, which allows us to use focus pulls to direct the audience's attention from the foreground to the background and vice versa.
Below is an example of a focus pull. We did not use the tutorial part of the video as the Iphone has the feature built in and is very intuitive.

The Iphone 5 has 16gb of space with about 8gb free so that is over 4 hours of HD video
We looked at using the cameras the school provided. They are panasonic ????
However we decided not to use them as from our experience of them last year they do not provide the range of features we are planning to use for some of our shots or cope well with low lighting conditions which will be a key feature of our trailer to create tension and a sombre mood.

Another piece of hardware we are planning to use is the gorrillapod.
This brand of camera tripod has unique bandable legs which means it can be suspended from anywhere and secured anywhere, even with little ground space available.

This will help us to film in the challenging urban environment of London and also to obtain shots and angles which we would not be able to achieve with just a conventional tripod
We are also taking a conventional tripod like the one below to provide a stable surface when we are filming in open areas and also it has a handle which allows us to tilt and pan smoothly, both features which we are using for some of our shots.
However since both of the tripods are designed for conventional SLR's and camcorders, the only connector on them is the screw on the top, so to enable the Iphone to fasten securely, we have sourced an adjustable converter which will hold both types of Iphone's and has a screw hole in the bottom to connect to tripods

For lighting as well as the fairly bright wash of light provided by the torch of the iphones, we also have a LED ring, which throws light outwards to create a general discreet light, as unlike the iphone it is made of many small LED's so doesn't cast as harsh shadows and it's not as obvious where the source is.
We are also taking a Maglite torch as they have the most powerful beam and best battery life and provide a direct beam which can be used to cast shadows and highlight certain areas of the shots.
We are also taking a Magna lite as it provides a direct beam which we will use to cast shadows and highlight particular areas of the shot
